I have worked alongside Nick Hayward for over a decade now and it has been nothing but a joy. He has always been dedicated, hardworking, focused and a highly creative collaborator. I first met him as a ped camera operator on the floor of Shortland Street. I don't think there can be a more demanding environment to learn your craft than that show. Every day the sheer amount of material that needed to be filmed and the complex process required to work in with so many departments simultaneously has led to Nick becoming one of the best storytellers behind a camera I have met in my career. Later I worked with Nick when he became DOP for Shortland Street. He was always incredibly well prepared for the day and was always interested in working closely with me and the performers to draw out the story. He was unrelenting in his efforts to get the absolute best out of every scene. He has a deeply calm and gentle approach to his work and I can honestly say I have never seen him raise his voice. Every problem or hurdle is approached with positivity and generosity and he always seems to have time to mentor and guide newer members of his team. This way of being flows into the work and allows me to get exactly what I need. Whether it is his music or his remarkable design work he is a hugely creative and inquisitive person, with an eye for detail and is exactly what you want in a Director of Photography. I would not hesitate to work with Nick again.
